With that out the way, let’s take a look at this SEO case study that was undertaken for this website. Ideally I’d like to be obtaining traffic with people looking for a WordPress developer based in Johannesburg. If I can pick up traffic from outside South Africa, then that would also be a huge bonus.

This particular case study will only be focusing on two keywords or key search phrases to keep the work simple and narrow down my efforts, to see how it impacts the level of search on my website. Before getting started, I checked the ranking for ‘WordPress developer johannesburg’ and ‘hire a WordPress developer johannesburg’.

WordPress SEO service - keyword ranking

As you would expect from almost every single search results page, the top 4 results are always going to be paid adverts. I plan to cover some of the PPC stuff in another post, so for now we are going to be focusing on the organic search results that normally appear in the middle of the page, just after the top 4 ad placements and above the bottom 4 ad placements.

What is most interesting to note on the second image, is that when you search for ‘WordPress developer Johannesburg’, it immediately gives you job listings for people and companies that are LOOKING for WordPress Developers, instead of people that are actual WordPress developers. That means the majority of the competitors are job directories, which is going to make it tough to the stand out for that specific search term.

With that in mind I figured it might be a better idea to target a phrase like ‘hire a WordPress developer’. After running through some of the search results for that, it became clear that Google still thinks I’m looking for WordPress jobs instead of actual WordPress developers.

SEO for wordpress websites

At this point it’s a good idea to dive a little deeper into some keyword research and see what terms people are using to find WordPress web developers. For now I’m going to be creating a Google analytics account and registering the site on search console. All of this can be done by following the step-by-step guide created by google. Once you have that done and you have your keyword research complete, it’s time to start the on-page optimisation process.

This used to be search engine focused and relied quite heavily on keyword intensive content that was primarily structured for search engines so that your site could rank somewhere in the search results. As you would expect from a fortune 500 company, they only hire the best people that are constantly updating their search algorithm to rank search results that are more answer orientated rather than search engine orientated.

What Does That Mean for WordPress SEO?

Well the practice of SEO hasn’t really changed because you still need to stick to the basics, however you need to shift your focus on to creating content that is informative and actually helps people answer the questions to which they need answers.
